South Island travel by road after earthquake

We were hoping to travel by road North of Christchurch up to Kaikoura, Picton and through to Greymouth in early February but we're not optimistic given available information on road closures.Should we travel South of Christchurch instead?

You can still travel to all the places you mention above, but it will just take longer due to the road closure of part of state highway one.
