In april/may 2018 we will be travelling both islands in a motorhome departing Christchurch to auckland., over 3 weeks. Is it necessary to pre book caravan park sites or can we just arrive and book in,as we want to have a fluid itenenary

As April/May is not peak season you should be ok. It might may to check with one of the camping places just to double check, as they will know best.
