Milford Sound Self-Drive

Hi there, I am looking to self-drive to Milford Sound from Queenstown during Oct 1 - 2, was wondering if this is possible or will I need snow chains?

You should be fine without chains, but there is a small chance snow chains must be carried if the weather is bad. Or if their is a lot of snow during that time chains could be required.
