Road from Wellington to Christchurch after 2016 earthquake

Please advise whether the coastal road from Wellington, Picton to Christchurch has been completely restored after the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. Will be driving there in March 2018. If not, what is the alternative route. Thank you.

There is no road between the North and South Islands, so you will need to take the ferry (or fly) from Wellington to Picton. The road from Picton to Christchurch should be open this December, so will be open by March next year. If by chance it is closed, you can travel down the middle of the island through the Lewis Pass.
