5 nights in south island winter away from ski resorts - where to stay?

Hi. We are spending 12 nights in the south Island in August 2018. The first 7 nights at Cardrona skiing, then we would like to send 5 nights visiting other areas of the south Island. Queenstown would be the obvious pick but the accommodation in Queenstown is quite expensive as its peak skiing time.We have never been to the south island so I'm not sure what region to go to. We fly back out from Queenstown so we can't go to far. I was thinking we would spend a night at milford sound, and then perhaps go to a wine region for the other 4 nights.Any ideas would be appreciated. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids and will have a hire car. Was thinking perhaps Dunedin? Might be a bit far to drive to christchurch? Thanks for any ideas.

Cromwell may be a cheaper place to stay, but you'd need to allow an hour for travel time. Cromwell accommodation options can be found here.
Regarding visiting Dunedin, you'd want to allow 3.5 hours driving time from Queenstown, or 6 hours to visit Christchurch.
