New Zealand public transportation

We are planning a month long trip in March of 2018.We will be taking a 2 week guided tour first then want to go on our own and explore for another 2 weeks. How easy is it to use the public transportation to get around the islands or does a person have to use the charters ?

Public transport is largely confined to the cities that they run in, and is normally run by local councils. As such, you'd need to look for a company that covers the country. A list of operators that advertise on our site can be found here. Naked Bus may be your safest bet.
