Auckland vs Wellington vs Christchurch

My daughter is seriously considering doing an international internship for her writing major this summer. New Zealand is one of the options she has, but she does not know if she would be placed in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. My concern is that she is expecting all the beautiful scenery of mountains, etc that is always promoted, but if she is placed in Auckland I fear that she will be disappointed because in my researching, it seems like the amazing scenery that she is expecting is closer to Wellington and Christchurch. Is there much of the beautiful mountain scenery near Auckland? Would she be disappointed by being placed there as opposed to the other two cities?

I may be a little bias as I live in Christchurch, and that would get my vote. The South Island is renown for it's scenery and mountains, with the Southern Alps being the so-called back-bone of New Zealand. There are mountains in and around Wellington too, but Christchurch is in closer proximity to more of them. As for Auckland, there are hills around the place, but it has nothing on Christchurch or Wellington.
