Visiting the Hobbit set from the Airport

I plan to stay in Auckland for a couple of days in late July before flying back to Scotland on the 29th. The Hobbit Tour is on my son's lists of places to visit. Could you recommend which area to stay in to make the most of our short time, and confirm if there are easy transport links from the airport to the movie set? Thank you!

Rotorua would be a good place to stay. There is a lot of activities to do there, and you can also get picked up for the Hobbiton tour from Rotorua. Or if you are wanting to stay in Auckland, the central city might be easiest for getting transport etc.
