Whangaruru Nature and Eco Tourism
One hour north of Whangarei, Whangaruru is a harbour that boasts spectacular beaches against a verdant backdrop of flora and fauna and breath-taking coastline.
The harbour is said to have been named by Puhimoanariki who was sailing up the coast at the time, looking for shelter. The task took him a long time and upon his discovery, he christened the harbour “Whangaruru”. Whanga means ‘to wait’ and ruru ‘to shelter’.
