'Wonders of the West Coast' Competition
Ian Manson of Hamilton was the lucky winner of New Zealand Tourism Online's 'Wonders of the West Coast' Competition. Here is what he had to say ...
Thank-you we really did enjoy our surprise trip, thank as to you all and to our son who enetered my husband's name. What a lovely surprise.
We added to the trip by using the Tranz Alpine train to get to Greymouth and the coast to Coast bus to go back to Christchurch. We can recommend both of those.
I think the highlight of our trip would have to be the Dragon's Cave Rafting.
The leader of our group was a lovely young lady called Chrstina, who was full of information and encouragement, capable and inspiring. The Cave venture included quite a few wee personal challenges, which was made more exciting by the way Christina presented each part of the journey to us. Our reward was a spa, wine and hot muffin. which left us feeling exhilarated and relaxed at the same time. What a nice way to finish the adventure.
Our Shantytown was also very entertaining despite gthe show of West Coast Rain. The only snag we hit was due to the fact that we had free tickets and no transport (having flown and trained in). There appears to be no easy or reasonably priced access unless you buy your tickets from the shuttle bus company. In the end we used a local taxi service and the driver was a chatty fellow who showed us around on the way. Most people would not have to deal with getting there the way we did, so it wouldn't be a problem. We enjoyed our train ride and came home with some successfully panned gold! We especially loved getting up close and personal with the local Wekas as we dont have them at home. The displays were well set out and informative... very interesting. It's a scary thought to think that I remember some of this equipment in use!
The last adventure was our bus trip with Kea to the glaciers and Lake Matheson. We were lucky to get a break in "that weather" at the glaciers but not at the lake. We have seen the lovely pictures so we could imagine it while we stood at the lake's edge.We walked to the face of Fox Glacier and so had a very good look at it. We considered taking the helicopter over to Fox from Franz Joseph and now wish we had.
That will have to wait for our next West Coast adventure as we have seen a Lot more we would like to do including the wild rafting and visiting Ruby Rocks for long enough to choose something really nice. So we will be back!
The accommodation at the Kingsgate was very comforable and the staff very friendly and helpful.
So all in all here's a HUGE thank-you from both of us.Ian Manson
