Golden Point - a Tale of Gold and Gold Mining
The Golden Point Historic Reserve lies some 50km inland from Palmerston, near the village of Macraes Flat and adjacent to the giant Macraes gold mine.
As well as the machinery of mining, the reserve preserves the manager's house and three sod cottages used by miners. The sods were cut from the ground, dried, and then used as bricks.
A mud plaster protected the bricks from weathering. A number of interpretation panels guide visitors through the features of the reserve. The stamping battery is still occasionally run on open days.
