Lake Tekapo Activities

The often placid lake is ideal for jet boating and small boat cruises, allowing people to enjoy the beautiful scenery and get to places that can only be reached by boat.

On the summit of Mt John is a scientific astronomy observatory on a hill rising 300 metres above the surrounding plains. Tourists are able to go on tours around this facility and learn all about the observatory and astronomy.

The wilderness of Mackenzie is prime for exploring. Horse treks and cycling are available where one can explore and gaze around at the spectacular scenery around Tekapo. Alternatively one can enjoy the countryside by hunting or fishing, the Lake and rivers are full of much sought after trout and the surrounding mountains are hunting grounds for the Alpine Tahr or deer.

Tekapo offers scenic air tours around the dazzling land scape of the Mackenzie Basin and through the wilderness of the mighty Southern Alps. Spot wild Tahr, admire glaciers, see the Mackenzie lakes scattered everywhere and more.

Guided tours are offered in Tekapo to explore the many rugged mountain ranges in the area. The hikes are a great way to truly see and appreciate the scene environment of New Zealand.

In the winter, Tekapo is prime territory for skiing. With multiple ski fields and winter parks Tekapo offers a range of options to visitors. Tekapo ski resorts offer a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside, the lake and mountains. Tekapo boasts the highest ski field in New Zealand at 1725 metres (5500 feet).
