Off the Beaten Track to... Volkner Rocks
If you enjoy diving and snorkelling, then a trip to the Volkner Rocks in the Te Paepae o Aotea marine reserve is a must-do. The Volkner Rocks are three volcanic rock stacks that are attached to White Island (a more widely-known active volcano nearby) and rise 112 m above sea level from a depth of 200-400 m. The rocks are considered to be one of the best dive sites in the country and are located 55km from Whakatane. Visitors can only visit the marine reserve by boat, but there are numerous charter boat services in eastern Bay of Plenty.
The rocks themselves are of cultural significance to Ngati Awa and other iwi. Traditionally they are the departure place for the spirits of people of Mataatua descent. Early Polynesians used the rocks as a navigational guide.
The underwater scenery and marine life in the marine reserve is spectacular. Underwater visibility is generally excellent due to low levels of sedimentation and run-off. During the summer, many shark species and long-tailed stingrays can be found in the reserve.
Things To Do
- Diving – A number of recognised dive sites are located within the reserve.
- Snorkelling – Snorkel around the pinnacles and some of the reef channels.
- Cruise – Take a scenic cruise to enjoy the above water scenery.
