Otago Peninsula Night Tours, Night Sky Tours
The Otago Peninsula is situated east of Dunedin City on the Otago coast and forms one wall of the eroded valley that now forms Otago Harbour. The peninsula runs parallel to the mainland for 20km and is joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus about 1.5km wide.
A day set aside for exploration is a popular with visitors to the Peninsula. Much of the peninsula is steep hill country with the highest points being Mount Charles, Harbour Cone and Sandy Mount. A scenic drive can take in a number of interesting stops including: Larnarch Castle, Woodland Gardens, Portobelllo Aquarium, Otakou Marae, Victory Beach 'Pyramids' and the Chasm and Lovers Leap rock formations down Sandy Mount Road. Time should also be allowed for spotting the wildlife – fur seals at Pilots Beach, sea lions on Te Rauone Beach, penguins at Allans Beach and the albatross colony at Taiaroa Head. more
Many visitors come to the Otago Peninsula primarily to view the albatross as it is the only colony to be found on an inhabited mainland. Seal and sea lion colonies also breed around Taiaroa Head and the peninsula is a favoured habitat for Southern Right Whales and small dolphins.
Accommodation in nearby Dunedin is plentiful with many choices including hotels, motels, backpackers and bed and breakfast accommodation.
