Masterton
Masterton is the largest town in the Wairarapa region. Enjoying a temperate climate with sunny summers, Masterton is the centre of major annual events including the International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and the Golden Shears shearing competition.
Masterton is home to numerous attractions, activities, and classic kiwi adventures such as hot air ballooning and jet boating. Actvities and places to visit include Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre, Cape Palliser, nearby Castlepoint Beach, Queen Elizabeth Park and numerous award winning vineyards. Masterton is also an ideal base to explore further afield, around the beautiful Wairarapa region, and the lower North Island. more
Masterton is a great family destination. There you can find the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park with towering English trees and fabulous Kids Own Playground. Just along the road you will also find the indoor and outdoor swimming pools and hydro-slide; The Wool Shed — the National Museum of Sheep and Shearing and Aratoi: Wairarapa Museum of Art & History. Masterton is also a great base to explore nearby Castlepoint, Wairarapa’s most spectacular beach with its 100-year-old lighthouse, giant limestone outcrop and landmark Castle Rock. The road north offers rich pickings with Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, home to Manukura the first all-white kiwi chick to be hatched in captivity and the Tui Brewery in Mangatainoka.

Wairarapa DHB and Hospital is located at the eastern edge of Masterton on a regular bus route. It is a new and modern hospital which was completed in 2006. It has a range of services including outpatients, an emergency department and rehabilitation, medical, surgical, paediatric and maternity inpatient services with a total of 80 beds.
